#16 Elizabeth opened the season with a set of wins that cemented their place in the Top 25, while Plainfield had played close in two of its losses this year and was looking to get over the hump against a top tier opponent in Union County in the Wheelie Good Pierogi Union County Game Of The Week.

6'4" senior guard London Carson came out the gate with the first two baskets for the Minutemen and after a Cam McRae three from the wing, Elizabeth had an early 7-0 lead and Plainfield called time out. No to be intimidated, sophomore forward Rashawn Williams fired back with a quick 5 points and then freshman sensation Micah Gordon hit a three from the left corner to put Plainfield ahead 8-7 midway through the opening quarter. The teams traded baskets, with McRae leading the Minutemen charge. The Minutemen led 15-12 after a quarter but were a little unsettled offensively and moving a touch too quickly on shot selection.

Gordon started the second with an off balance three for Plainfield to tie the score and drew “oohs” and “aahs” from the crowd with the shot—The freshman has a very, very bright future. Elizabeth was more patient in their halfcourt offense to start the second and also efficient in the transition game, pushing a lead to 21-15 midway through the second stanza. Elizabeth stretched the lead to ten just before half on a Carson three at 28-18 were comfortably ahead, 31-21, as the teams went to the locker rooms. Carson led all scorers in the first half with a dozen while Gordon led Plainfield with 6.

JoJo Torres had the first 6 points of the third quarter for the Minutemen as they held on to their 10 point lead through the midway point of the third.

Plainfield would no go quietly into the night and battled back to within 5 late in the quarter and be within striking distance after 3, trailing the Minutemen 40-35. Both Carson and Gordon were held to two points in the third.

Elizabeth put its foot on the gas in the fourth and opened up a 15 point lead, but back to back Gordon threes made it a 55-45 game with 2:18 to go, pushing the freshman up to 14 pts. Junior Joel Cordoba hit a layup and cut it to 8 as the game approached 90 seconds to go but could get no closer the rest of the way as Elizabeth held on for a hard fought 63-52 victory.

Case Agency Player Of The Game

London Carson, Elizabeth

The 6'4" senior guard did a little bit of everything at both ends of the floor but carried the Minutemen offensively with a 22 point performance as they pulled away early in the fourth and then put on their hard hats to close out a rugged victory.
