JD Core Training North Jersey Game Of The Day

Newark Arts vs Saint Benedict’s, 7P

It’s not a cross-city rivalry. It’s an across-the-street rivalry. One could throw a paper airplane(Do kids still make those?) and hit the side of Arts from Saint Benedict’s steps. That proximity adds a great feel to a massive matchup this evening.

Prophet Kates will expect Arts to contend for the county and state championships this year, especially with Arts dropping in enrollment to Group I. They feature a number of college prospects, including Shelton Colwell, Ayyub Wilson, Kevin Freeman and Bryson Lopez, among others. They’ve begun the season with a 2-0 record and solid wins over Lawrence Woodmere Academy from New York and Payne Tech.

Saint Benedict’s will open their season across the street from The Hive, but Mark Taylor will have the Bees ready to play.

Hudson Catholic vs Hoboken, 430P

Nick Maraniello wins basketball games. His Hawks started the season with a win against a talented Montgomery team over the weekend. Keith McKnight, a 6’7” Quinnipiac commit, along with Manhattan bound guard Omari Moore combined for 31 of 48 points in the victory.

Hoboken enters with high expectations for this season, along with a move up in enrollment to Group II. The return of senior guard Nick Petruzzelli and Lamir Boxley, along with forward Nico Esposito, give the Red Wings enough college level talent to compete with most teams across the state in their classification…Can the trio go toe-to-toe with Hudson’s scholarship prospects? We’ll find out this afternoon.

Seton Hall Prep vs St Joe’s Metuchen, 7P

Two new coaches with high profiles will clash in West Orange this evening as Sterling Gibbs Pirates take on Karl Towns Falcons.

Saint Joseph’s enters the season with a number of options to see meaningful minutes but they are also looking for someone to step into the leadership role. Could it be 6’6” junior Ryan Hilongos, Brayden Danchak, 6’8” Will Phillips? We’ll get some insight this evening.

Seton Hall Prep, under Gibbs, landed one of the most high profile transfers in the state this past summer in 6’2” sophomore guard Anthony Gonzalez from Union City. AG is an All-State level player who brings instant offense to the lineup. Toss in 6’7” Jayden Teyan and a host of returning role players seeking to compete for spots, the Pirates have something brewing.

Plainfield vs East Orange, 7P

Led by sophomore sensation Micah Gordon, Plainfield will expect to compete for county and state trophies. He’ll get help from Rashawn Williams, who had a solid opener vs Patrick School.

East Orange fell to a very talented Immaculate team in their opener and now faces their second tough test out the gate. They'll need consistency from their guards and someone to try to match Gordon's explosive offensive output to be in the game.
